How to Install Windows 10 on Mac OS X

You must know that Windows 10 is pretty awesome and is definitely worth installing. Apple users shouldn’t miss out on it too. You don’t have to buy a new hardware for installing Windows 10, instead you can directly install Windows on your Mac.

There are two ways to install Windows 10 on your Mac namely Virtual Machine and Boot camp. Using Virtual Machine, you use a virtualization program through which Windows 10 can run directly over Mac OS X. But virtual machines like VMWare & Parallels cost over $70.

So boot camp is the best way to install windows 10 on mac as it is absolutely free of cost. Although unlike Virtual Machines, you cannot run the two windows simultaneously using Boot Camp but it definitely gives Windows full access to the processing power of Mac. So in this tutorial, we would show you how to install Windows 10 on your Mac:

You need following system requirements to install Windows 10

  1. You need atleast 2GB of RAM (4GB would be better)
  2. Atleast 30GB of free hard drive space for running boot camp
  3. 16 GB flash drive to create bootable drive to install Windows 10
  4. Second computer

Following these steps will create a dual boot configuration on your Mac, which means that every time you switch on your device, you would have to choose the operating system (Windows 10 or Mac)

Note that before you do perform these steps, just to be on the safer side, back up your data present on the hard drive to any portable hard disk. Although Boot camp is very stable, but when you create partition in your hard disk, you may lose some data.

Step 1: Download the copy of Windows 10, not the upgraded version but full version. Note that you can download the windows for free but you need to buy its license if you want to use it after 30 days trial period. You need to have Windows 10 ISO file present in your flash drive to begin the installation process.

Step 2: Open Boot Camp Assistant on your Mac, which is located in Applications under the Utilities folder. You can also search it using spotlight.

Step 3: At first the Boot Camp will prompt you to back up your Mac, you should already have done by now. After that on the next page you will be required to select some tasks, make sure you check on all the boxes present there. You also need to be sure that your flash drive containing Windows 10 ISO file is plucked into your Mac. Then click on Continue.

Step 4: Select the location of the Windows 10 ISO file. Also choose the destination disk as USB drive and click on Continue. You will be prompted that all the data in the drive will be lost so make sure that you do not have any important information present in the USB flash drive.

Step 5: After clicking on Continue you need to wait out for like an hour or so as it takes time for Boot Camp to finish the boot drive.

Step 6: After the above step, you will be then asked to choose the size of the partition. This is an important decision as you cannot reverse it and the only way to part the disk space again would be to install the whole Windows again.

You can use the slider to select the amount of space that needs to be given to each OS. Windows 10 itself requires 20GB to install, so if you are not looking to use too many applications on Windows 10, you may give 30GB to it. But if you want to do some heavy gaming, then you need to give the appropriate disk space to Windows.

Once you are done with the partition, click on the Install button. After this the partitioning will take place and Mac will restart. You have to make sure that the flash drive has been plugged in the whole time.

Step 7: Once the installation has been completed, the screen will land up on Windows Setup process. You will be required to choose Time, Language and currency format. After filling up the details, click on Next

Step 8: Enter the Windows 10 product key, if you have it otherwise click on Skip. After this you will be asked to confirm the Windows Edition you want to install. Click Next

Step 9: You will see a list of partitions, one of which will be named as BOOTCAMP. This is the partition where we will install Windows 10. Select it and Format.

Step 10: Then windows setup will confirm, click on OK and click on NEXT

The rest of the setup will be done automatically and Windows 10 will be installed on your Mac.
