The newly introduced F5 AI Gateway is designed to enhance the management and security of AI applications for enterprises. This automated solution facilitates secure interactions between AI applications, APIs, and large language models (LLMs) through a containerized Kubernetes service. It can function independently or as an enhancement to existing F5 software, hardware, or services.
The gateway integrates with leading AI models, including those from OpenAI and Anthropic, and is particularly adept at addressing the complex challenges unique to AI applications. Lori MacVittie, a distinguished engineer in F5’s CTO office, highlighted these challenges, noting the unpredictable nature of AI interactions, where both inputs and outputs are often variable and may derive from multiple unstructured data sources.
MacVittie elaborated on concerns regarding the difficulty of identifying sensitive or erroneous information within unpredictable AI outputs. Traditional security measures, such as API security and web application firewalls, are typically effective because they work with predictable formats. In contrast, the non-deterministic behavior of AI applications complicates efforts to develop policies that can effectively monitor and secure communication.
The F5 AI Gateway is equipped with features to optimize AI handling, such as semantic caching, which can alleviate redundancies in LLMs to enhance operational efficiency. It also provides capabilities for traffic routing and rate limiting to ensure service consistency, thereby managing costs associated with local and external LLMs.
Furthermore, the AI Gateway has robust defensive mechanisms to protect against various attacks, including prompt injection and model theft. It can effectively scrub personally identifiable information (PII) from outbound responses while adhering to operational compliance requirements.
F5’s AI Gateway can be utilized alongside the company’s NGINX application security suite and BIG-IP application delivery platforms, offering a seamless integration experience for customers. This ensures enterprise clients can observe, protect, and accelerate their AI deployments while maintaining a high standard of security.
