Director Michael Bay is reportedly collaborating with actress Sydney Sweeney on a film adaptation of Sega’s classic arcade racing game, OutRun. The movie, based on the 1986 arcade hit, is said to be in the works, with Bay attached to direct and Jayson Rothwell penning the script. While Sweeney is involved as a producer, she is not slated to star in the film.
Sweeney is currently one of Hollywood’s most sought-after actresses, with upcoming projects that include the Barbarella remake. Her move into production highlights her expanding role behind the camera as well.
The original OutRun game is known for its racing mechanics and lacks a narrative, which raises questions about how it will be adapted into a full-length film. While previous attempts at adapting Sega games like Shinobi have not come to fruition, the success of the Sonic the Hedgehog movies may signal more potential for video game film adaptations.
Universal Pictures is backing this project, continuing its trend of successful video game adaptations, as seen with hits like The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Five Nights At Freddy’s, both of which performed remarkably well at the box office.
With video game films becoming increasingly popular, there’s curiosity about how OutRun will translate from the arcade to the silver screen. As the buzz around video game adaptations grows, fans are eagerly anticipating more details about this exciting new project.
