Google’s Threat Intelligence Group has revealed a significant trend in cybersecurity: in 2024, attackers exploited 75 zero-day vulnerabilities across various systems. Although this figure marks a decrease from the 98 vulnerabilities recorded in 2023, it represents an increase from the 63 vulnerabilities noted in 2022.
The report categorizes these vulnerabilities into two main groups: those affecting common user technologies like mobile phones, operating systems, and browsers, and those impacting enterprise-specific technologies, including security software and specialized equipment. Google attributes the drop in exploited vulnerabilities to improved security measures implemented by product developers. However, it also noted that commercial surveillance companies have become better at hiding their activities, complicating detection efforts.
Notably, while individual users continue to be common targets for hackers, there has been a marked rise in attacks aimed at enterprise technology. In 2024, such attacks constituted 44% of exploited vulnerabilities—a significant increase from 37% in the previous year. This shift highlights the urgent need for enterprises to bolster their defenses against emerging threats.
