The Dark Side of Deportation: How ICE’s Airline Hack Exposed a Man’s Disappearance to El Salvador

This week, hackers breached GlobalX, an airline associated with deportation flights conducted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The leaked information included flight manifests revealing the deportation of Ricardo Prada Vásquez, a Venezuelan man whose family believed he had been "disappeared" by immigration authorities. Previously, U.S. officials had provided little information about his whereabouts, causing distress for his family.

After the breach, the hackers shared flight details with reporters, asserting the need for transparency in an administration they described as "fascist." The revelation that officials did not maintain accurate records raises serious questions about the deportation process and government accountability. Michelle Brané, an advocate for immigrant rights, highlighted the importance of clear and accurate records, especially given the dangerous conditions in places like El Salvador, where Prada was sent.

Other significant incidents reported this week include:

  1. A security researcher revealed malware found on the computer of a staffer from Elon Musk’s Department of Governmental Efficiency, indicating potential security risks in sensitive government information systems.

  2. Users of Musk’s AI tool, Grok, are testing its ability to generate inappropriate content by requesting the "undressing" of women in images, further exposing shortcomings in moderation.

  3. Schools in North Carolina and Canada are facing extortion threats linked to a ransomware attack on PowerSchool, an education software company that had previously paid a ransom but whose data is still being exploited.

  4. MrDeepFakes.com, a notorious site for nonconsensual pornography, went offline after its creator was identified, marking a significant development in the fight against deepfake exploitation.

As these stories unfold, they illustrate ongoing challenges surrounding privacy, accountability, and the intersection of technology and human rights.
