According to Alex Zenla, CTO of cloud security firm Edera, the advent of vibe coding could mean that AI could soon lose its scrutiny-free status when it comes to security. He warns that if AI models are trained on outdated or vulnerable code, the resulting output could reintroduce past vulnerabilities or create new ones. Furthermore, vibe coding often only produces rough drafts of code, lacking the specific contextual understanding of product requirements. This reliance on human reviewers to address all potential flaws in AI-generated code adds another layer of complexity.
Eran Kinsbruner, a researcher at Checkmarx, emphasizes that vibe coding complicates the development lifecycle. Different outputs from the same AI model can be produced based on minor variations in input, leading to inconsistencies among developers. A Checkmarx survey revealed that about a third of information security professionals reported that over 60% of their organizations’ code was AI-generated in 2024, yet only 18% had a list of approved coding tools.
While open source projects can carry inherent risks, the transition to AI-driven code generation strips away many accountability measures. As Dan Fernandez from Edera notes, the transparency available in platforms like GitHub, where contributions can be easily traced, is absent in AI-generated code. This lack of accountability raises concerns over the origins and security of the code.
Moreover, while vibe coding offers low-cost solutions, particularly for small businesses or vulnerable groups, it can also heighten security risks for those who are least equipped to handle them. The landscape in enterprise development is similarly fraught with personal repercussions that can arise from widespread vulnerabilities caused by vibe coding.
Experts like Jake Williams, a former NSA hacker, stress the importance of learning from the security challenges in the open source community to mitigate risks associated with AI-generated code. If the industry fails to adapt, the repercussions could be severe.
