Microsoft to Establish Its Largest Quantum Computing Site in Denmark

Microsoft is making a significant investment in quantum computing with plans to establish its largest quantum site in Denmark. This initiative aims to launch the world’s most powerful quantum computer by 2026, enhancing security, research, and emerging technologies.

The new facility will be located in Lyngby, Denmark, which is notable for being the home of Niels Bohr, a pioneer in quantum mechanics. Microsoft’s expansion in this area will focus on the development of universally applicable, fault-tolerant quantum computers and will also serve as one of the first AI-supported hardware laboratories globally.

Central to these efforts is research into topological qubits, which are critical for the Majorana chip designed to scale up to millions of qubits on a single chip. Achieving scalable and fault-tolerant quantum computers is viewed as essential for unlocking the true capabilities of quantum technology.

Microsoft’s Lyngby laboratory will enable the manufacture of core components for the Majorana chip locally. This initiative builds on years of collaboration with leading Danish research institutions, including the Danish Technical University (DTU) and the renowned Niels Bohr Institute.

Aligning with the European Commission’s Quantum Europe Strategy, which envisions Europe becoming the global leader in quantum computing by 2030, this new lab will help attract and cultivate top talent from across Europe. In partnership with Atom Computing, Microsoft is also developing the "Magne" project, which is expected to become the most powerful next-generation quantum computer, slated for operation by the end of 2026.

The establishment of this laboratory represents a strategic move for Microsoft, aiming to accelerate advances in quantum computing to address significant challenges from theoretical research to practical applications.
