New York Takes Action: A Crackdown on Celebrity Deepfake Websites

In a landmark legal move, the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office has conducted the largest seizure of deepfake websites to date, targeting 12 domains that exploited around 1,200 victims, primarily women. This action addresses the proliferation of nonconsensual deepfake pornography that has plagued the internet for nearly a decade, particularly affecting notable celebrities, politicians, and public figures.

The seized websites, now displaying seizure notices, were used to unlawfully share, publish, and sell deepfake videos, many of which depicted women in explicit and often degrading situations. District Attorney Alvin Bragg highlighted the severe consequences these violations have on victims’ personal and professional lives, calling on those affected to report their cases to the cybercrime bureau.

Deepfake technology, which emerged in late 2017, has evolved significantly, leading to increasingly realistic and manipulative content. These websites were viewed millions of times, often featuring the faces of famous personalities embedded into pornographic videos. The legal action seeks to curb this harmful industry, as New York’s criminal laws empower officials to target such explicit content.

Despite the seizure, experts underline the persistent threats posed by the broader deepfake ecosystem. They emphasize the need for multifaceted approaches to effectively combat the tools and infrastructure supporting the creation and distribution of nonconsensual intimate imagery. As further investigations into the operators behind these websites continue, this case represents a crucial step towards holding accountable those who exploit this emerging technology for malicious purposes.
