The recent surge in the cost of memory components due to the rapid advancement of generative AI technologies has led Nvidia to announce a significant price increase for the Shield TV Pro. This streaming device, which debuted in 2019, will now retail for $299.99, reflecting a $100 hike from its original price of $199.99.
Despite its enduring capabilities, bolstered by an AI upscaling feature running on the aging Tegra X1+ processor, the Shield TV Pro is now facing the same market pressures affecting other consumer electronics. Nvidia attributes this price adjustment to a substantial rise in the costs of components, particularly memory.
Historically, the Nvidia Shield TV has been viewed as more than just a product; it’s a passion project for Nvidia. Andrew Bell from Nvidia shared insights earlier this year on the enduring popularity of the Shield, emphasizing that the company continues to manufacture and sell the device as demand permits. Unfortunately, without a surplus of components from before the AI boom, even this established device can’t escape the new economic realities.
As a response to changing market conditions, numerous gaming console manufacturers, including major players like Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony, have also adjusted their pricing strategies. For instance, the PS5 Pro has seen its launch price swell from $699.99 to $899.99.
The demand for the Shield TV Pro remains high, but potential buyers should note the limited stock amidst rising manufacturing costs. While it may appeal to users seeking advanced features like extensive codec support or Plex servers, many may opt for less expensive streaming options if simple Netflix usage is their aim. Currently, the Shield is available at the new price through retailers such as Best Buy, although it remains unavailable directly from Nvidia’s own store.
For those who prioritize streaming functionality over advanced features, alternative devices may be more cost-effective.
