Exploring Switch 2 Backward Compatibility: Which Games Work and Which Don’t?

Nintendo recently shared detailed information regarding the backwards compatibility of the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. This news follows a dedicated Nintendo Direct event focused on the new console. The company confirmed that while the Switch 2 will support both digital and physical games from the original Switch, there are some limitations and exceptions.

Backwards Compatibility

During the announcement, Nintendo disclosed that over 100 games from the original Switch could potentially encounter issues when played on the Switch 2. The only title explicitly confirmed as incompatible is the Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 04: VR Kit, due to hardware size differences. Nintendo has not provided a timeline for the resolution of compatibility issues for affected titles, leaving players uncertain about whether these games will eventually work on the new system.

Performance Enhancements for Games

Some original Switch games will receive performance upgrades on the Switch 2. Notable titles such as Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Party Jamboree will have paid upgrade options, either through standalone versions or upgrades for existing owners. A selection of games will also get free updates, which may include enhancements in performance and new features. Such games include:

  • Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker
  • Super Mario Odyssey
  • The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening
  • Pokemon Scarlet & Violet

Nintendo’s Digital Ecosystem

Although the Switch 2 eShop wasn’t mentioned in detail during the Direct, there are plans for a redesigned game store. Nintendo aims to improve game discoverability and offer virtual game card functions to streamline the integration of digital games between the original Switch and Switch 2 systems. Players can also transfer their Nintendo Account, which will allow them to move digital games and save data from the original console to the new one seamlessly.

Nintendo is part of a wider trend in the gaming industry where new consoles support previous generation titles to ease the transition for players. Companies like Microsoft and Sony have also embraced backwards compatibility, reflecting a shift towards digital purchasing and cross-generation play.

Compatibility Issues List

While many games are confirmed as potentially having issues, Nintendo has provided a list, but has not detailed the nature of these issues. Games currently flagged for compatibility investigations include titles like Alan Wake Remastered, Fall Guys, and several arcade archives.

Startup Issues

Some games are also reported to experience startup issues on the Switch 2. However, Epic Games will launch a compatible version of Fortnite for the new console on June 5, allowing players to download the updated title.

The upcoming Nintendo Direct in April may provide further details as the launch date for the Switch 2 approaches. For more specific information about game compatibility and updates, it’s best to follow official Nintendo communications.
