Unveiling the UAE’s Latest Innovation: A Compact Yet Potent AI Model

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has unveiled an open-source AI model that is capable of advanced reasoning, matching offerings from major US and Chinese tech companies. This breakthrough indicates that the UAE’s significant investments in artificial intelligence are yielding tangible results.

Developed by researchers at the Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) in Abu Dhabi, the model named K2 Think is one of the first sovereign AI models designed for specialized reasoning. It is available for free, courtesy of G42, a tech conglomerate funded by Abu Dhabi’s sovereign wealth. G42 operates the model on a cluster of Cerberas chips, opting for alternatives to Nvidia’s hardware.

K2 Think is an important contribution to the global contest for AI supremacy, where the US and China are the primary competitors. Notably, it is smaller in scale—consisting of 32 billion parameters—compared to large language models from OpenAI and DeepSeek that exceed 200 billion parameters. Instead of generating quick responses through synthesis, K2 Think excels in answering complex queries through a process of simulated deliberation.

Eric Xing, MBZUAI’s president and lead AI researcher, hailed K2 Think as a significant technical innovation. He noted that the model effectively combines several recent advancements, including fine-tuning on long reasoning sequences and reinforcement learning to ensure accuracy. Additionally, it is optimized for efficient operation on Cerebras chips.

Xing clarified that developing K2 Think required thousands of GPUs during the training phase, ultimately using 200 to 300 chips for the final run. There are plans to integrate this model into a complete large language model in the near future. To support transparency and further research, MBZUAI has published a technical report detailing the innovations underlying K2 Think.

As various nations, including Saudi Arabia, ramp up their investments in AI, the UAE continues to position itself as a critical research hub, backed by billions in funding to foster innovation. The country’s leadership has also sought to establish partnerships and outposts globally to enhance its technological edge, notably shifting some ties from China to collaborate with the US on cutting-edge AI technology.

Peng Xiao, CEO of G42, remarked on the significance of smaller, resource-efficient models like K2 Think, emphasizing Abu Dhabi’s role in shaping the future landscape of global technological innovation.
