Just days after its launch, Roblox’s much-anticipated AI-powered age verification system is facing significant backlash due to major errors in identification. The system, designed to estimate a user’s age before allowing access to chat functions, has led to rampant misidentification, with young players being mistakenly categorized as adults and vice versa.
After its global rollout following initial tests in select regions, Roblox claims the new system aims to create safer chat environments by ensuring users are interacting with peers of similar ages. However, players have expressed frustration as they can no longer communicate freely with friends, prompting calls for the feature to be reversed. Furthermore, experts have outlined concerns that the system does little to curb predatory behavior on the platform, noting reports of age-verified accounts for minors being sold online for as little as $4.
Roblox’s chief safety officer, Matt Kaufman, defended the implementation, explaining that developing such a system for over 150 million daily users is extremely complex and that any expectations for immediate perfection are unrealistic. He reported that many users have verified their ages since the launch, suggesting a portion of the community values a safer environment.
The requirement for age verification, which mandates users to upload a government ID or use a camera to record a short video, has also raised privacy concerns. Many players are reluctant to participate, and after initial testing, reports indicate that only half of the users worldwide have completed the age verification process.
Negative feedback has flooded forums, social media, and Reddit since the global implementation, with countless examples of users wrongly assessed. Some players aged 23 have been categorized as teens, while others describe their younger siblings being classified as over 18. This misclassification has compounded worries among parents and game moderators regarding child exploitation in chats.
Moreover, many players have discovered ways to circumvent the system using avatars or altered images, further complicating the issue of safety. Roblox has stated that they will conduct random rechecks on user ages if errors are suspected, although details on how this would work remain vague.
The fallout from this rollout has severely impacted gameplay dynamics on the platform, with some developers reporting a drastic drop in chat usage. Users have expressed that the gaming experience feels lifeless, fearing that these changes may push the platform toward increased censorship rather than fostering the social interactions users expect.
Roblox has been under scrutiny from multiple lawsuits alleging inadequate safeguards for young users, raising urgent questions about the efficacy of its measures to protect minors. Despite the stated intent behind the age verification system, players and developers alike are urging Roblox to reconsider the implementation of these measures—calling for a return to a social environment that allows free communication while still addressing safety concerns.
