Prego Unveils Dinner-Conversation-Recording Device: Capisce?

Prego, the well-known pasta sauce brand, has ventured into the hardware realm with a unique gadget aimed at enhancing family dinner conversations. Collaborating with StoryCorps, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving personal stories, they have introduced the Connection Keeper, a puck-shaped device designed to record conversations at the dining table.

This innovative gadget features two microphones that capture audio from its surroundings. Developed to promote face-to-face interaction, the Connection Keeper encourages families to set aside their phones during meals. According to Elyce Henkin, managing director at StoryCorps, the intent is to foster genuine dialogue and connection, moving away from the distractions of technology.

However, it’s essential to note that the Connection Keeper is more of a promotional item than a mass-market product, with only a limited run of fewer than 100 units produced. The discreet design resembles a small tuna can, making it unobtrusive on the table.

To facilitate meaningful conversations, the device is packaged with conversation prompt cards. Users activate the device by pressing a button to record high-quality audio, which is stored on a microSD card capable of holding up to eight hours of content. Recordings can be saved privately or shared on a StoryCorps microsite, where selected conversations may eventually be archived in the Library of Congress.

Henkin reflects on the dynamics of family gatherings, acknowledging the vibrancy and chaos often present, which the Connection Keeper aims to capture. The program hopes to highlight the universal themes of connection and humanity present even amidst the noise of family interactions.
