Over the weekend in China, a humanoid robot developed by the tech company Honor set a new world record for the half-marathon, finishing in just 50 minutes and 26 seconds. This remarkable achievement surpasses the previous human record of 57 minutes and 20 seconds, held by Ugandan Olympic medalist Jacob Kiplimo. Notably, the fastest robot last year completed the same race in two and a half hours, highlighting the significant advancements in robotic technology.
The Beijing E-Town Humanoid Robot Half Marathon featured over 100 humanoid robots from 76 institutions, competing alongside 12,000 human runners in a staged but parallel event to prevent accidents. The design of Honor’s record-breaking robot included advanced features such as long legs, sophisticated balance systems, and a liquid cooling mechanism to maintain optimal performance throughout the race.
Many robots participated autonomously, utilizing AI algorithms to adapt their pace and balance in real-time. Honor’s winning robot functioned without direct human control, while another remotely-operated robot completed the course even faster, in 48 minutes and 19 seconds. Some competitors did experience malfunctions, such as falling or veering off course, although public reception has shifted from mockery to admiration for the technological progress shown by these machines.
This event is part of China’s broader strategy to assert its leadership in robotics development. While showcasing that machines can excel at certain tasks, it also raises questions about the future: Could we be entering an era where robots redefine physical capabilities previously thought to belong solely to humans?
