Meta’s New Policy: Your Instagram Photos Can Be Used in AI Images Unless You Opt Out

Meta has recently introduced a new AI image model called Muse Image, designed to compete with other AI image generation tools like OpenAI’s GPT Images 2.0 and Google’s Nano Banana 2. This rollout is integrated within the Instagram app and affects users with public accounts, who are automatically opted into allowing their content to be used for AI-generated images unless they choose to opt out.

The Muse Image model enables users to generate images using public Instagram profiles. If someone tags an Instagram account in a prompt, they can leverage Meta AI to create an image based on the user’s likeness. Meta frames this upgrade as a fun way to personalize content creation, facilitating the generation of custom graphics for events, collaborative concepts, and more.

To prevent your Instagram photos from being used in this manner, users must manually adjust their settings in the app. By navigating to their profile, tapping the settings icon, and selecting the option labeled "Allow people to use your content on Instagram and with AI features on Meta," users can toggle their preferences. However, at the time of checking, this feature was not yet updated in all accounts.

Additionally, while making an account private or changing settings can stop future generations, it won’t affect any images already created with your content. Users should be aware that they will not receive notifications if their content is used in AI images, which has raised concerns about privacy and control over personal media.

This change follows a growing trend in tech companies to require users to actively opt out of their data being utilized for AI training, further amplifying the importance of vigilance regarding social media privacy settings.
