Why AI Can’t Replace Human Creativity in Game Development: Insights from the Director of ‘Avowed’

As the gaming industry grapples with significant layoffs, particularly affecting narrative designers, Carrie Patel, the director of Avowed, reflects on the challenges new entrants might face in finding opportunities within this creative space. Patel has been with Obsidian Entertainment since 2013, rising through the ranks to lead the narrative design for Avowed, which is set in the same universe as the acclaimed Pillars of Eternity series.

Patel acknowledges the difficulties that her colleagues in the industry, particularly those hired in recent years, have encountered. She emphasizes the scarcity of roles, saying, “It just seems to be harder and harder to find a path in.” Despite these hurdles, she considers herself fortunate to have started her career when opportunities were more accessible.

With the early release of Avowed scheduled for February 18, Patel expresses excitement about delivering a rich narrative experience. She believes that RPGs allow players to engage with deep, nuanced stories and appreciates players’ investment in games that respect their time.

Patel explains that the storytelling success of Obsidian comes from a steadfast commitment to human creativity, rejecting the idea that artificial intelligence can produce compelling narratives. “Good game stories are going to be written by good narrative designers,” she asserts. This statement highlights her skepticism toward the growing trend of using generative AI in game development, corroborated by a recent survey noting that over half of respondents work in studios employing AI technology. However, Patel remains unconvinced that AI can replicate the uniquely human touches that make stories and characters resonate.

Despite broader corporate enthusiasm for AI, Patel finds encouragement in the audience’s appreciation for complex narratives, as seen with successful releases like Baldur’s Gate 3. For Patel, the aim has never been to create the longest game but to craft an engaging adventure where players feel at the center of an immersive world.

Patel emphasizes the importance of strong leadership in cultivating a positive team culture that encourages feedback and continuous improvement. She contrasts her inclusive approach with the more aggressive "masculine energy" narrative espoused by some industry leaders, advocating for a supportive environment that values diverse viewpoints.

In the face of industry challenges and the rise of AI, Patel remains dedicated to human-driven storytelling as the heart of game development, a stance she staunchly defends while navigating the complexities of creating meaningful gaming experiences.
