ThousandEyes continues to monitor and report on global network outages affecting ISPs, cloud service providers, and collaboration tools. Over recent weeks, there has been a notable fluctuation in the number and categories of outages observed.
During the week of October 6-12, a total of 185 global network outages were recorded, down 18% from the previous week. In the U.S. alone, outages decreased to 113. Breakdown by category indicated a decline in ISP outages from 133 to 124 globally and from 77 to 70 in the U.S., with public cloud network outages lowering significantly—from 46 to 22 globally and from 38 to 19 in the U.S. Notably, collaboration app network outages remained unchanged at zero across the board.
Two significant outages were highlighted during this week:
- GitHub faced a brief outage lasting 29 minutes affecting multiple users across regions, starting on October 9.
- Lumen, a Tier 1 carrier, experienced an outage on October 7, impacting various customers across numerous countries with a duration of 41 minutes.
Following this, the report from September 29-October 5 documented 226 outages, indicating a 26% decrease from the earlier week. Of note, both ISP and public cloud outages experienced reductions, but collaboration app outages maintained a steady zero.
The analysis from earlier weeks reveals ongoing challenges with network stability. A report from September 22-28 noted a spike in outages to 305, with ISP outages doubling in the U.S. alone. Notable events during that week included service disruptions at Zayo Group and Cogent Communications, impacting their respective partners across various international regions.
The trend of outages continues to be closely tracked, with a consistent archive of data over the weeks reflecting the evolving state of network reliability. This ongoing analysis by ThousandEyes serves as vital information for enterprises relying on these services for uninterrupted connectivity and performance.
