This retro console, exclusive to Amazon, stands out for featuring 25 modern homebrew games, which have a combined worth of over $100. Originally released back in 2018 at $70, the C64 Mini included 64 classic titles from the 1980s. The new Black Edition pays homage to the creativity of modern developers by incorporating several contemporary titles such as Sam’s Journey, A Pig Quest, and others that have been celebrated by gamers for their quality.
The majority of the included games, 19 in total, are available from popular publishers on sites like itch.io. These publishers include Psytronik and Protovision, known for their high-quality C64 games. Notably, Sam’s Journey, which features 30 extensive levels and an impressive design, costs $24 on its own, and comes as part of the Black Edition.
The package includes the same accessories as its predecessor, such as a USB joystick, HDMI cable, and a user manual. Although the console does not come with an AC adapter, users can power it through their TV’s USB ports or with any generic USB plug.
The C64 Mini is significantly smaller than the original Commodore 64 and features a non-functional decorative keyboard. To write programs or boot additional games, users can connect a real keyboard through one of the USB ports. There’s also a second USB port for an additional joystick to facilitate multiplayer gameplay.
