Riley Walz, known as the "Jester of Silicon Valley," is set to join OpenAI, focusing on developing innovative ways for humans to engage with artificial intelligence. This hiring has been confirmed by an OpenAI spokesperson.
Walz gained popularity for his humorous and provocative online projects that also serve as social commentary. His notable creations include Jmail, which allows individuals to browse through a simulation of Jeffrey Epstein’s email inbox, and Find My Parking Cops, a site that utilized public data to expose the locations of parking enforcement officers in San Francisco.
At OpenAI, Walz will be part of OAI Labs, a newly established team led by Joanne Jang. While the exact projects the team is working on remain undisclosed, it has been reported that their mission involves “inventing and prototyping new interfaces for how people collaborate with AI,” as noted by Jang.
OpenAI has been in a fierce competition with companies like Google and Anthropic to enhance user interaction with its AI models. ChatGPT, OpenAI’s flagship product, has already attracted over 800 million users weekly, prompting the company to seek new interfaces to further enrich user experiences. Despite his creative successes, Walz has faced controversy, notably when the Find My Parking Cops website was shut down by city officials within hours of its launch. The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency halted the tool to ensure that employees could continue their work without interference.
Walz has also been criticized during sensitive public incidents, such as when he attempted to analyze CitiBike trip data following the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare’s CEO in New York City. This led to backlash online, where some labeled him a "bootlicker" for cooperating with law enforcement, which put his safety at risk.
