WhatsApp, with over 3 billion users, is one of the most popular messaging apps globally. However, its widespread use makes it a target for various security threats. Recent incidents have highlighted risks such as a new form of account hijacking termed GhostPairing, where users are tricked into connecting an attacker’s browser to their account. Additionally, an Austrian study revealed a vulnerability that exposed billions of phone numbers through WhatsApp’s contact discovery tool, marking the most extensive exposure of such information to date.
Despite these risks, WhatsApp implements end-to-end encryption, ensuring that only the involved parties can read messages when executed properly. The app continues to innovate with features like passkey-encrypted backups and privacy-enhanced AI technologies. To further enhance security, users can take advantage of several key features:
1. Privacy Checkup
Start with WhatsApp’s Privacy Checkup in the settings, which allows you to control visibility settings for your profile photo, status, and more. Adjusting the "Last Seen" setting to "Nobody" can add an extra layer of privacy. You can also manage group addition permissions and silence unknown callers.
2. Disappearing Messages
To mitigate risks from spyware or unauthorized physical access to your device, enable disappearing messages. You can set messages to disappear after a selected time—24 hours, seven days, or 90 days. Remember, however, this requires trust, as screenshots can still be taken.
3. Two-Factor Authentication with a Security PIN
Create additional protection by enabling two-step verification with a security PIN. Go to Settings > Account > Two-step verification and set up your PIN. Adding an email will also assist in recovery if needed.
4. App Lock and Chat Lock
Prevent unwanted viewing of message previews by disabling push notifications. WhatsApp allows for additional security via FaceID, Touch ID, or Android Fingerprint Lock. Enable App Lock in Settings > Privacy > App Lock. For chats needing extra privacy, utilize the Chat Lock feature.
5. Enable Advanced Security Settings

8. Turn Off Media Downloads
To stop WhatsApp from automatically saving downloaded media, go to Settings > Chats and disable the "Save to Photos" option. For added security, use the one-time view feature for media sharing by selecting the ‘1’ icon before sending.
