Testimony Reveals ICE Agent Involved in Renee Good Shooting Was a Firearms Trainer

Jonathan Ross, an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer, was identified as the federal agent involved in the shooting of Renee Good, a 37-year-old woman, during an enforcement action in Minneapolis. This incident gained attention following a federal court testimony where Ross detailed his extensive background in law enforcement, including his role as a firearms trainer and member of a Special Response Team.

Ross testified in December about a previous incident from June, which shared similarities with the recent fatal encounter. The June operation aimed to apprehend Roberto Carlos Muñoz-Guatemala, who was wanted for being in the U.S. unlawfully. Ross’s team monitored Muñoz-Guatemala without entering his home, due to jurisdictional constraints, leading to a tense traffic situation where Ross broke a window to reach inside the vehicle.

Despite his attempts to apprehend him using a Taser, Muñoz-Guatemala managed to escape, resulting in Ross sustaining serious injuries and requiring 33 stitches. Subsequently, Muñoz-Guatemala called 911 to report Ross’s actions, which culminated in his arrest and eventual conviction for assaulting a federal officer.

The relationship between these incidents and Good’s shooting is significant. Reports indicate that during the enforcement action involving Good, Ross fired into her vehicle as she was attempting to flee the scene. Video footage suggests that Good, who had recently moved to Minneapolis and was a mother, was trying to maneuver her vehicle away from the officer.

Vice President JD Vance, during a White House press briefing, weighed in on the situation, highlighting Ross’s past traumatic experience, which may have influenced his response during the encounter with Good. Meanwhile, Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, Kirsti Noem, described Good’s actions during the incident as constitutive of "domestic terrorism."

Amid ongoing FBI investigations into the shooting, DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin emphasized the high-stress environment under which federal agents operate, suggesting that Ross acted according to his training. This sentiment was echoed in the commentary following the trial and by officials discussing the inherent dangers faced by immigration enforcement officers.

Ross’s history includes service in the Indiana National Guard and a tenure with Border Patrol, showcasing a long commitment to law enforcement responsibilities, especially involving immigration.
