Meta Hits Pause on Employee-Tracking Program After Internal Data Leak

Meta has decided to suspend its employee-tracking initiative after an internal security breach revealed sensitive data was accessible to unauthorized employees. Tracy Clayton, a company spokesperson, stated, "We have carefully designed this program with privacy safeguards and while we have no indication at this time that any data was improperly accessed by Meta employees, we’re pausing it while we investigate.”

The Model Compatibility Initiative (MCI), launched in April for U.S. employees, was intended to collect data such as mouse movements and keystrokes to train artificial intelligence systems. Initially, employees could not opt out, but after pushback, limited opt-out options were introduced. Despite the company’s claims that the data collection was critical for improving AI, employees expressed significant concerns over privacy and data security.

The issue was brought to light when a Meta engineer noted that databases containing MCI data were exposed to all employees. A former employee involved in organizing protests against the program described the situation as "a mess" and criticized the leadership’s lack of attention to employee concerns. Internal forums saw a wave of disappointed reactions following the leak.

Vice President Stephane Kasriel later announced the program’s suspension, revealing that the security issue was detected on June 18 and addressed within hours, albeit with a more thorough fix needed afterward. He emphasized that MCI would be reinstated only when the company was confident in its data protection systems, indicating that sufficient data had been gathered for evaluating the initiative’s long-term benefits.
