Navigating Google’s AI Search: Why You Keep Getting Referred Back to Google

Google has developed a troubling pattern where its AI-driven search tools increasingly redirect users back to its own services—like Google Search and YouTube—over third-party websites. This trend was highlighted in a study by SE Ranking, which noted that about 17% of links generated in Google’s AI Mode lead users on a circular path back to Google properties, a significant rise from previous figures.

As website owners report decreasing traffic—potentially due to the prominence of AI-generated summaries in search results—Google maintains that its AI implementations boost click quality. However, many SEO experts argue that this circular navigation, where users click on links only to be sent back to another Google search, presents a frustrating experience rather than answering queries effectively.

In specific niches, the reliance on Google is more pronounced. For instance, over half the citations in Entertainment and Travel categories within AI Mode direct to Google Search results. This situation raises concerns about the sustainability of online publishers, who are increasingly sidelined in favor of Google’s self-referential linking system.

The impact of this trend signifies a shift in web behavior, from a model that distributes traffic across various websites to one that "conserves" traffic within Google’s ecosystem. This pattern benefits Google directly, driving more searches and, by extension, increasing advertising revenue, while leaving publishers in a precarious position.

Despite some partnerships between tech firms and publishers to share revenues, Google has not adopted a similar model to compensate those whose content is utilized in AI summaries. As queries continue to lead back to Google, many question the long-term effects on the broader internet landscape, pondering the benefits—or lack thereof—this presents to the web at large.
