IBM Announces $2 Billion Quantum Chip Foundry with Government Funding Support

The U.S. government has granted IBM $1 billion to lay the groundwork for the first purpose-built quantum chip foundry in the country. This investment, which Is matched by IBM, will lead to the establishment of a new entity named Anderon, set to operate out of Albany, New York.

IBM has been a leader in the realm of quantum computing for many years. According to CEO Arvind Krishna, the company’s experience in silicon wafer fabrication is crucial for advancing the broader quantum technology sector. He emphasizes that Anderon will be strategically positioned to support America’s growing quantum technology industry by producing quantum wafers for multiple hardware vendors.

In addition to IBM, several other firms in the quantum field, such as GlobalFoundries, D-Wave Quantum, and Rigetti Computing, have also received financial backing from the government, highlighting the administration’s commitment to advancing quantum technologies.
