After a long pause of three decades, the Famicom Detective Club series has made a comeback with its latest installment. Emio – The Smiling Man is the first release since the debut of The Missing Heir and The Girl Who Stands Behind on the Famicom Disk System. This title launched today, August 29, exclusively on the Nintendo Switch, with physical copies currently scarce. Emio – The Smiling Man is currently available at GameStop. Meanwhile, Best Buy and Target are out of stock, and neither Amazon nor Walmart carries it at present.

The game, Emio – The Smiling Man, is sold as a $50 standard edition in the US. A collector’s edition with support for the English language is also available for import for those looking to secure a copy. The digital version can be purchased via the Switch eShop for a similar price.

The narrative is centered around two detectives investigating a student’s murder potentially linked to the mythical Smiling Man. In this installment, you play as an assistant private detective at the Utsugi Detective Agency, tasked with determining if the murder heralds the return of Emio. Significantly, Ayumi Tachibana, a major character from the initial games, features as a playable character.

It’s worth noting, given its nature, that Emio – The Smiling Man is one of the few Nintendo-developed and published games with a Mature ESRB rating, a departure from the company’s typical family-friendly games.

If you’re interested in exploring earlier instalments of the series, The Girl Who Stands Behind and The Missing Heir, you might consider acquiring The Two-Case Collection for $60. This collection, updated for the Switch in 2021, features remastered editions of both titles.
