In February 2022, Konrad Tomaszkiewicz, known for his role as director of The Witcher 3, established a new game studio called Rebel Wolves, collaborating with fellow experienced developers from the gaming industry. Their first project, The Blood of Dawnwalker, has recently revealed its opening scenes, setting the stage for a medieval European landscape under the dominion of vampires.
The initial trailer introduces Coen, the protagonist, who is desperately trying to save his sister, Lunka, from human authorities set on executing her due to a plague. Just in time, a vampire named Brencis intervenes, eliminates the guards, heals Lunka, and announces his intent to take control of the valley.
As the primary narrative commences, the story depicts Coen and his community living under Brencis’s vampire regime for two years. Coen, labeled the Dawnwalker, is unique; his silver poisoning has hindered him from transforming completely into a vampire. He retains his human form during the day, but as night falls, he harnesses the powers of a vampire.
The game promises players significant narrative freedom, but there is an underlying urgency: Coen has only 30 days and nights to rescue his family from Brencis’ dungeons. Players must choose wisely on how to allocate their time while also forming alliances with others who wish to dismantle the vampire rule, all while navigating the opposing agendas of potential allies.
Interestingly, the not-so-simple dynamics of power are further complicated by the revelation that Brencis has human supporters. These humans, once plagued and afraid, now rely on the protection the vampires provide, even as they are treated like livestock. With a new ruling class in place, the bondage has merely shifted from human feudal lords to their vampire counterparts.
While The Blood of Dawnwalker does not have a confirmed release date yet, fans can expect a significant gameplay reveal later this summer.
