The Countdown Begins: Humane AI Pin Set to Become E-Waste Next Week

The story of the Humane Ai Pin is concluding as the company has announced its acquisition by HP in a deal worth $116 million. This acquisition, set to finalize at the end of February, includes more than 300 patents, a few Humane employees, and the Cosmos operating system. Despite plans for licensing the operating system for use in third-party products, no agreements were reached.

Humane captured attention in late 2023 with its AI wearable, touted as a potential smartphone replacement, featuring a ChatGPT-powered assistant and a projection display. However, the product was met with severe criticism upon its launch in 2024, revealing numerous issues such as overheating, an unreliable AI assistant, limited features, and a bothersome projector.

In light of dismal sales, HP appears uncommitted to the Ai Pin hardware. Sales ceased, and refunds are being issued for devices purchased after November 15, 2024. Notably, Ai Pins will become inoperable after noon Pacific on February 28, with the majority of core functionalities ceasing—though users will still be able to check battery life. Additionally, all stored data will be erased, prompting users to back up any important information.

Looking forward, HP intends to integrate Humane’s Cosmos AI into its product lineup to enhance functionality. Meanwhile, Humane employees will transition to a lab within HP named HP IQ, focused on innovating smart features across the company’s offerings.
