The United States Army has begun utilizing a generative AI tool known as CamoGPT to identify and remove mentions of diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) from its training materials. This initiative was prompted by a recent executive order from President Donald Trump, which instructed the Department of Defense to eliminate policies perceived as promoting "un-American" theories related to race and gender.
As part of this operation, the Army’s Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC), which oversees soldier training and development, is employing CamoGPT to assess its policies and materials for DEIA references. An internal memo confirms that this AI tool will help to align training content with the directives of Trump’s January 27 executive order, called "Restoring America’s Fighting Force." This order mandates a purge of content deemed divisive or discriminatory.
The executive order includes a comprehensive review of past DEIA initiatives across the military, with TRADOC spokesperson Army Major Chris Robinson emphasizing the command’s commitment to executing these directives thoroughly and professionally. While specific methods employed by CamoGPT remain undisclosed, its functionality allows TRADOC to input and query large datasets, which helps pinpoint targeted terms like "dignity" and "respect" within documents.
CamoGPT, launched in the summer of 2024, was initially intended to enhance productivity and readiness in the Army. Currently, around 4,000 personnel use the AI daily, aiding in various tasks from training material development to translations. Captain Aidan Doyle, a data engineer for CamoGPT, notes that the AI’s usage simplifies the process of locating relevant information in documents.
This AI-driven review of training materials reflects a broader governmental initiative to eliminate DEIA content, initiated as soon as Trump was reinstated in January 2025. This includes not just the closure of DEIA offices within the military but also the removal of historically significant content, such as references to the all-Black Tuskegee Airmen from training programs.
CamoGPT is part of a larger trend within the Pentagon, where AI tools are increasingly adopted for various operational purposes, like the US Air Force’s NIPRGPT, which assists airmen in document summarization and drafting. The Army’s AI Integration Center (AI2C), which developed CamoGPT, is focused on creating practical AI applications for soldiers, emphasizing user adoption and real-world usefulness.
Future decisions regarding the wider deployment of CamoGPT within the Army will depend on the outcomes of its initial applications and its perceived value to military operations. The underlying aim is to build software solutions that soldiers find indispensable, contributing to enhanced operational efficiency.
