Several AI chatbots designed for sexual fantasy role-playing are unintentionally exposing user conversations online due to misconfigurations. Recent research from UpGuard revealed that around 400 AI systems are leaking chats, some of which include disturbing content related to child sexual abuse.
The interaction with these chatbots is immediate, allowing users to engage in real-time conversations. However, improperly configured systems can result in sensitive chats being publicly accessible. UpGuard’s scans of the web identified 117 IP addresses where such leaks are occurring, primarily among test setups, though a small number hosted sexual role-play scenarios. Notably, one chatbot instance allows users to converse with various predefined characters, some of which are designed to engage in explicit discussions.
Over a 24-hour study period, UpGuard collected around 1,000 leaked prompts from these systems, which encompassed a range of languages, and included narratives explicitly involving children, with some scenarios depicting minors as young as seven. The research emphasizes the urgent need for regulation in the domain of AI chatbots, given their potential to facilitate the creation and dissemination of harmful content.
While UpGuard could not pinpoint the specific platforms responsible for the leaks, indications suggested that the data might stem from small, personally operated AI models rather than established companies. Importantly, the leaked data did not contain any personal identifiers, highlighting the inherent privacy risks tied to user interactions with these AI systems.
The explosion of generative AI technology has accelerated the popularity of AI companions, which users may develop emotional attachments to. While many employ these bots for companionship and support, there are significant concerns regarding the potential for oversharing personal information in sensitive chats. Experts warn that leaks of such interactions could lead to severe privacy violations and have implications for users’ safety.
The AI chatbot market, which includes both companionship and role-playing services, currently exhibits a lack of content moderation. Instances of harm have already emerged: notable cases involving AI services, including lawsuits stemming from user harm, indicate that regulatory measures are sorely needed to protect vulnerable populations, particularly minors.
