Lumen Technologies has announced its acquisition of Alkira, a cloud-native network-as-a-service platform, in a deal valued at $475 million. The acquisition aims to address a long-standing gap in enterprise networking, particularly in terms of east-west traffic, which involves data flow between different clouds and data centers. While Lumen has developed its connectivity solutions primarily for north-south traffic—connecting on-premises environments with cloud providers—Alkira’s capabilities will complement this by facilitating more efficient connections within multi-cloud environments.
During Lumen’s Q1 2026 earnings call, CEO Kathleen Johnson emphasized the challenge enterprises face in adapting outdated infrastructure for their AI-driven ambitions. She noted that while Lumen’s current offerings, provided through their NaaS platform, allow API-driven access to cloud connectivity, Alkira’s software will manage and orchestrate connectivity across data centers and clouds in a more streamlined fashion.
The market for cloud-to-cloud and data center connectivity is expected to grow significantly, with Lumen projecting a total addressable market of approximately $70 billion when combining Alkira’s functionalities. Johnson described Alkira as a strategic fit that would accelerate Lumen’s execution timeline from years to mere months.
Alkira operates independently of Lumen’s existing framework, focusing on a virtual port model that enables seamless management of network connectivity across different environments. This is distinct from Lumen’s Project Berkeley, which simplifies connections from on-premises to cloud. The integration of Alkira and Lumen’s Multi-Cloud Gateway will provide customers with a unified control plane, enhancing routing, security, and policy management for both north-south and east-west connectivity.
Lumen intends to retain Alkira’s engineering team and platform as they are, integrating Lumen’s fiber network as an underlay while maintaining Alkira’s operational integrity. Johnson articulated that the goal is to support Alkira’s growth without merging it into Lumen’s existing operations, emphasizing a partnership model that enhances both entities’ strengths.
