Shortly after the successful release of the remastered Backyard Baseball ’97 last October, Playground Productions and Mega Cat Studios announced their next project: a remaster of Backyard Baseball ’01, set to launch in early July. This upcoming title will showcase 28 out of the original 31 MLB players, featuring the likenesses of baseball legends like Cal Ripken, Jr., Sammy Sosa, Mark McGwire, Alex Rodriguez, and Derek Jeter.
Details on which three players opted not to feature in the remaster have not been revealed. The game will proudly display logos from MLB’s professional teams and aims to recreate the beloved gameplay style while integrating modern controls appropriate for touch and PCs.
Playground Productions CEO, Lindsay Barnett, expressed excitement about collaborating with MLB, emphasizing the historical significance of Backyard Baseball ’01 in introducing major baseball figures into the gaming arena. "We’re honored to partner with MLB to bring this iconic game to modern gaming devices for the first time," Barnett stated.
Backyard Baseball ’01 will be available on PC via Steam and on mobile devices beginning July 8. While Backyard Baseball ’97 made its way to Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 5, there has been no confirmation yet regarding a similar release for Backyard Baseball ’01 on consoles.
