Whistleblower Alleges DOGE Compromised Social Security Data Security

As students head back to school, concerns have risen over recent incidents involving swatting at universities across the United States. A leader of an online group called "Purgatory," which claims connections to the cybercriminal network The Com, has taken responsibility for hoax calls alerting authorities to fake active shooter situations.

In addition to this alarming trend, researchers warn that cybercriminals are increasingly leveraging generative AI to execute ransomware attacks, allowing individuals without extensive technical knowledge to develop harmful software. Concurrently, the once-mysterious Russian shortwave station UVB-76 has reportedly shifted into a platform for Kremlin propaganda.

A significant development has emerged involving the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), associated with Elon Musk. A whistleblower, Charles Borges, the chief data officer at the Social Security Administration, has revealed troubling claims. He alleges that DOGE staff uploaded a vast database containing sensitive personal information, including Social Security numbers, to a cloud server with insufficient security measures. This action potentially violates several federal statutes, despite internal warnings regarding the risks. While there has been no confirmed breach, Borges cautioned that the data’s vulnerability could lead to widespread identity theft and substantial costs for the government if compromised.

The FBI has highlighted a broader threat, revealing that China’s Salt Typhoon cyberespionage group targeted over 600 companies across 80 countries. The group had previously infiltrated US telecoms to spy on communications, with extensive access granted to numerous victims, including sensitive call records.

On a political note, CIA officers are facing a wave of dismissals driven by Director of National Intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard. Following a summit between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, a senior CIA analyst was stripped of her clearance as part of a broader effort perceived by many as a loyalty purge. Gabbard’s initiative to restructure the Office of the Director of National Intelligence reportedly eliminates over 500 positions and consolidates several departments, prompting fears that such actions could undermine the integrity and efficacy of the intelligence community.

In another part of the world, hackers known as Lab Dookhtegan have launched aggressive cyberattacks against Iranian shipping companies, incapacitating satellite communications for over 60 vessels. This latest assault follows previous similar disruptions against these firms.

Lastly, Google has indicated plans to move beyond its traditional cybersecurity efforts to actively disrupt foreign hacking operations. This strategy could mark a significant shift in how tech companies engage with cyber threats, transitioning from a reactive to a proactive stance in preserving digital safety.
