In the upcoming release of Octopath Traveler 0, players will have the opportunity to rebuild their towns alongside a party of heroes. However, the size of your city will depend on the gaming console you choose.
Square Enix has announced specific limits for each platform. The Nintendo Switch restricts players to a maximum of 250 buildings, while the Nintendo Switch 2 and PlayStation 4 allow for up to 400 buildings. If you aim for the highest limit of 500 buildings, you’ll need to play on the Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, or PC.
Further differences emerge regarding rendering resolution and frame rates. The original Nintendo Switch provides a resolution of 1280 x 720 at a maximum of 30 FPS. Meanwhile, the Switch 2, PlayStation 4, and Xbox Series S can achieve 1920 x 1080 resolution, with the Series S supporting up to 120 FPS, while the other two are capped at 60 FPS. In contrast, both the PS5 and Xbox Series X tout 3840 x 2160 resolution and 120 FPS, with the PC version allowing players to customize their resolution and frame rate options.
GameSpot’s Steve Watts noted enhancements in customization, larger parties, and expansive towns after testing a demo at Gamescom. Octopath Traveler 0 is set to launch on December 4 for multiple platforms, including PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch. Notably, Square Enix confirmed that there will not be an upgrade option from the Switch version to the Switch 2 version.
