Inside the Tension: Greg Brockman Shares His Encounter with Elon Musk

In a revealing courtroom testimony on Tuesday, Greg Brockman, OpenAI’s cofounder and president, recounted a confrontational meeting in 2017 with Elon Musk at Musk’s lavish property. The encounter involved Brockman and Ilya Sutskever discussing OpenAI’s strategic future amid Musk’s intentions to gain control as a for-profit arm was being considered.

Prior to their meeting, Musk unexpectedly gifted Brockman and Sutskever new Tesla Model 3 cars, which Brockman perceived as an effort to make them feel obligated to Musk. He later described a moment where Musk’s frustration escalated—after they opposed his desire for singular control over AI development, Musk stormed around the table, making Brockman fear he would resort to physical aggression. This intense exchange led Musk to threaten to withdraw funding unless both Brockman and Sutskever left OpenAI.

Despite initial tension, Musk’s chief of staff reached out later that night, indicating that further discussions about their futures at OpenAI were still possible. This incident highlights broader concerns from OpenAI about Musk’s volatile behavior and how it might affect the company’s trajectory.

Musk has publicly alleged that his donations of approximately $38 million toward OpenAI were mismanaged, paving the way for what has become a lucrative for-profit enterprise known for products like ChatGPT. Both Brockman and other OpenAI executives, including CEO Sam Altman, deny any misconduct, with a jury expected to begin deliberations soon in the ongoing case, Musk v. Altman.

Further in his testimony, Brockman shared anecdotes demonstrating Musk’s unsuitability to lead an AI organization. He recounted an incident involving OpenAI researcher Alec Radford, who felt demoralized by Musk’s harsh critique of an early AI chatbot. This response convinced Brockman and Sutskever that Musk lacked the visionary qualities necessary for leading OpenAI.

Discussions around Musk’s control continued as Brockman and his colleagues considered the possibility of voting him off the OpenAI board. They repeatedly met at Musk’s mansion to navigate their funding challenges, but ultimately decided against ousting him, feeling it was the wrong move. By early 2018, Musk opted to leave OpenAI, expressing concerns about its direction.

Also embroiled in this complex narrative was Shivon Zilis, who served as a liaison between Musk and OpenAI. Zilis later joined OpenAI’s board and navigated her own challenges within the organization post-Musk’s departure, as various board conflicts surfaced, including an attempted removal of board member Adam D’Angelo due to competitive interests and the controversial exit of Helen Toner after a failed leadership change.

Zilis is expected to testify in the trial, adding another layer to the unfolding boardroom drama as both sides prepare for the upcoming legal proceedings.
