Chinese AI Researchers Make Waves on X: A New Era of Digital Expression

In recent times, there has been a noticeable uptick in Chinese AI researchers using X (formerly Twitter), engaging in discussions about their work, recruiting talent, and contributing to the global AI narrative. This surge comes at a time when employees from major companies like OpenAI and Anthropic have become more reticent in sharing information online, creating a gap that Chinese researchers have stepped in to fill.

One prominent example is Moonshot AI, the lab behind the Kimi K3 model. In the past year, around 30 accounts affiliated with Moonshot have started posting on X, including co-founders, former employees, and collaborators. These researchers not only share updates about their projects but also interact with Western counterparts, fostering friendships and a community of shared interests.

Moonshot stands out as particularly active, but many members from other prominent Chinese firms like Minimax and Z.ai have joined the conversation as well. Notably, DeepSeek staff, even those restricted from leaving China due to government control, continue to post updates and job opportunities on X, demonstrating their commitment to engaging with the wider AI community.

Meng Fanqing, a cofounder of Evolvent AI and a former Moonshot intern, describes X as the best platform for AI discussions due to its mixed audience and effective recommendation algorithm. He notes that unlike Chinese platforms, which often struggle with serious technical discourse, X allows for meaningful exchanges. The viral success of DeepSeek’s R1 model earlier in the year catalyzed a broader engagement from Chinese researchers as they began to think about their global branding.

Interviewed analyst Tiezhen Wang noted that as OpenAI and Anthropic have grown into significant enterprises, their researchers have been less willing to divulge their methodologies online, inadvertently creating an opportunity for Chinese AI voices to emerge more prominently.

Another contributing factor to the popularity of X among these researchers is the lack of comparable platforms in China where high-quality technical discussions can occur. While sites like Zhihu and Xiaohongshu have seen diminishing quality and have shifted focus away from serious content, X has remained a hub for substantive technical exchanges.

During significant moments, such as the release of Moonshot’s latest research paper, the disparity in discourse becomes apparent. The Chinese platform discussions often devolve into personal anecdotes and superficial commentary, whereas audiences on X are more focused on technical achievements and developments.

The entry of these Chinese researchers has generally been met positively by their Western counterparts, who are eager for insights from Chinese AI labs. Many influential figures in the West have already been translating Chinese AI content into English, indicating a hunger for understanding developments in this rapidly evolving field.

Beyond engagement, these researchers also recognize X’s potential for marketing their companies. By establishing a personal brand on the platform, they enhance visibility for themselves and their employers, which is crucial in an increasingly competitive landscape. Wang highlighted how fostering a culture of social media presence among employees can lead to more genuine connections with the audience, potentially sparking collaborations.

Moonshot, distinguished for its innovative internal culture, is leveraging the charisma of its team members to enhance its public image. Allowing Chinese researchers to articulate their work directly on X benefits the discourse about Chinese AI in the U.S. "This transparency can help dispel misconceptions about China’s AI ambitions," Wang concluded, suggesting that X may serve as an essential conduit for better understanding the developments within Chinese AI labs.
