Amid a surge of AI enhancements across Apple devices, the company has introduced a notable feature called Image Playground, which allows users to create art through text prompts. This new tool is available on devices running iOS 18.2, iPadOS 18.2, and macOS Sequoia 15.2 as a preinstalled application, offering functionalities that range from generating digital invite backgrounds to crafting cartoon images of loved ones.
To access Image Playground, you must enable Apple Intelligence on your device, which is typically on by default. You can find it under the Apple Intelligence & Siri section in your Settings.
Creating New Images
Upon opening the Image Playground app, users are presented with several themes and places for inspiration, such as Birthday, Adventure, City, and Mountains. Simply tapping any of these suggestions will prompt the app to generate a corresponding image after a brief processing time.
Alternatively, users can enter custom text to describe their desired image in the input field. Whether it’s “an eagle gliding over the beach” or “a professor working on an experiment,” once the text is submitted, Image Playground will begin to create the visual representation.
Users can also start by uploading a photo from their gallery or taking a new one. For instance, a snapshot of a pet can be transformed into a creative AI rendition after only a few moments.
The app currently supports two styles for image generation: Animation and Illustration, with the option for more styles likely coming in future updates.
Refining and Saving Images
Once an image generation begins, users can scroll through multiple results. If the initial images don’t meet expectations, users can refine the output by altering elements. For example, if you’d prefer a different expression for a character, you can simply re-enter that request in the text box.
The app allows for the inclusion of new features as well, enabling users to tap on icons like Volcanoes or Fireworks to enhance the scene. Conversely, if an element doesn’t fit the vision, users can tap the image to regenerate it or remove specific elements using the minus button next to the requested feature.
After finalizing an image, users can choose to copy it, share it through social apps, or save it to their camera roll. The Done button stores the image in the app’s gallery, making way for new creations with the + button.
Additionally, completed images can still be edited later, allowing for adjustments or a complete rework of the original concept. Users can easily delete unwanted images or add captions for better organization in their gallery.
