Starcloud’s Bold Vision: Launching AWS Outposts into Space

Starcloud is set to make history by launching AWS Outpost hardware into space, which will take place during their second satellite launch scheduled for October. CEO Philip Johnston announced this exciting venture in a LinkedIn post, marking Starcloud as the first company to do so with Amazon Web Services’ (AWS) on-premises private cloud offering.

This move follows the successful deployment of an Nvidia H100 GPU on Starcloud-1, which was launched in October 2025. The race to establish data centers in space is heating up, with similar announcements from companies like Guoxing Aerospace and Starlink indicating ongoing interest and investment in this frontier.

However, AWS CEO Matt Garman expresses skepticism regarding the feasibility of such ambitious plans. He noted that logistical challenges, such as insufficient rockets for wide-scale launches, significant costs associated with sending payloads into space, and concerns about space debris, hardware maintenance, and potential latency issues pose considerable hurdles. These challenges raise doubts about the practicality of deploying data centers in orbit.

As the debate continues, experts point to various logistical issues that could complicate efforts to implement space-based data centers effectively.
