More than 70 civil rights organizations, including the ACLU and EPIC, are urging Meta to abandon its plan to incorporate facial recognition technology into its upcoming smart glasses, a feature reportedly referred to as “Name Tag.” This coalition of advocacy groups argues that this technology would pose a significant threat to abuse victims, immigrants, and LGBTQ+ individuals by enabling stalkers, predators, and governmental agents to identify individuals in public without their consent.
In a letter addressed to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, the groups emphasize that face recognition within such inconspicuous eyewear cannot be safeguarded through design adjustments or opt-out options. They point out that the feature would allow wearers to access information on individuals within their sight, raising severe privacy concerns. The letter also demands transparency about any incidents where wearables have been misused in harassment or stalking cases, along with a commitment from Meta to consult advocacy groups before implementing biometric identification in any consumer device.
Details on the internal development of the "Name Tag" feature, revealed in a February report, show that engineers at Meta have been assessing two potential versions: one to identify only connected individuals on Meta platforms, and a more expansive version that could recognize anyone with a public Meta account. Given the extensive implications for privacy, the coalition is calling on Meta to completely abandon this feature prior to its expected launch.
Meta has previously faced criticism for its handling of facial recognition technology. The company had ceased its Facebook photo-tagging system in late 2021, following significant public scrutiny and legal challenges. Despite these past actions, legal and ethical pressures have mounted, with recent lawsuits highlighting the potential harms associated with various tech features.
