Unitree Robotics is set to launch its affordable humanoid robot, the R1, on international e-commerce platforms like AliExpress. This move represents a significant step in making advanced robotics accessible to consumers. Previously available at a higher price, the R1 is now priced at approximately $4,370—down from its initial $5,900.
This pricing strategy positions the R1 as a budget-friendly alternative against more expensive competitors. For instance, other humanoid robots, including Unitree’s flagship H1, are priced around $90,000, while Tesla’s yet-to-be-released Optimus targets a price tag of under $20,000 once production scales up.
Standing at four feet tall and weighing 50 pounds, the R1 features 26 smart joints, allowing it to perform remarkable agile movements like cartwheels and handstands. It also employs a sophisticated language model for voice commands and programming via a developer’s kit. However, it is essential to note that the R1 lacks articulated hands and is not designed for complicated tasks, positioning it as an "intelligent companion" rather than a household helper.
Unitree previously utilized AliExpress for the sale of its G1 model, priced just under $19,000. The introduction of the R1 on global platforms is seen as an effort to normalize humanoid robots and expand their presence beyond the realm of novelty and into practical applications for research, software development, and education.
