2026 Network Outage Report: An In-Depth Internet Health Check

ThousandEyes, a division of Cisco, regularly monitors and reports on global Internet and cloud traffic, particularly focusing on network performance related to ISPs, cloud service providers, and collaboration platforms. The weekly reports provide insights into various outage events and help track trends in service delivery.

Internet Report for May 18 – May 24

For the week of May 18 to May 24, ThousandEyes reported 313 global network outage events, marking a 25% decrease from the previous week’s 415 outages. In the U.S., 195 outages were reported, down by 27% from 268 outages. The breakdown by category is as follows:

  • ISP outages: 131 global outages, a decrease of 9%. U.S. ISP outages slightly increased to 76, up by 3%.
  • Public cloud network outages: Dropped dramatically from 196 to 109 globally, a 44% decrease, and in the U.S., outages fell from 174 to 91, a 48% decrease.
  • Collaboration app network outages: Both globally and in the U.S. saw a reduction from 2 to 1, a 50% decrease.

Notable Outages

  • May 20: GTT Communications, a Tier 1 provider, faced a 35-minute outage that affected multiple regions, predominantly observed at their Seattle nodes. The outage had a significant downstream impact on partners and customers.

  • May 19: Arelion (formerly Telia Carrier) experienced a 25-minute outage, impacting a wide array of regions, including the U.S., U.K., and several European countries. It was first detected at nodes in Los Angeles and later expanded to nodes in Warsaw, Poland.

Internet Report for May 11 – May 17

In the previous week (May 11 to 17), the report showed an increase in network outages to 415, compared to the prior week’s 285, representing a 46% increase. The U.S. reported 268 outages, up 50%. The categorization is:

  • ISP outages: Increased globally from 118 to 144, a 22% rise, with the U.S. also seeing a 12% increase from 66 to 74.
  • Public cloud network outages: Increased from 103 to 196 globally, almost doubling, with the U.S. outages rising from 88 to 174.
  • Collaboration app network outages: Decreased globally from 3 to 2.

Notable Outages

  • May 13: Comcast saw a 17-minute outage impacting various international regions, with the focus on Atlanta nodes.

  • May 13: AT&T also reported a 9-minute outage, primarily affecting customers across the U.S. and Canada.
