There is no shortage of loot in Last Epoch, with dozens of items dropping from enemies all across the various regions of the map. Your inventory will likely be flushed with loot by the time you finish the tutorial, so you need to know everything you’re able to do with all of the items you’re acquiring.

You can choose to sell the loot at an Armorer’s Shop, which is located in every major settlement in Last Epoch, wear the items on your character, or drop them on the ground. There’s also a hidden fourth option, however, which is to salvage the item and receive crafting materials, affixes, and more. To see how you can salvage your items in Last Epoch, take a look at the guide below.

Contrary to other ARPGs, you can’t selectively salvage items in your inventory. Instead, you should navigate to the Forge (recognizable by an anvil symbol on your map) or simply hit “F.” The Forge is uniquely your a salvaging destination in Last Epoch.

In the Forge, you are capable of inserting any loot from your inventory into the prominent gear compartment on the screen’s left side. Caution is advised so as to only select gear intended for salvage. You can position other items in the slot for new affixes or to augment their forgeability, but understanding the salvage process is mandatory before attempting this.

With your item positioned in the gear slot, select the “Use a Modifier Item” feature found at the screen’s base. Here, you must utilize a Rune of Shattering, the singular method available for salvaging an item in Last Epoch. Any alternate Rune does not offer item salvaging. The Rune of Shattering is identifiable by a firebird emblem, and can be obtained in a similar way to any other game loot.

Once you have your item and the Rune of Shattering prepared in the Forge, press the large, red “Shatter” block at the screen’s base. This action dismantles the item and remits all of its Affix Shards and Glyphs back to your inventory. I recommend moving all crafting items into the Forge in order to avoid inventory clutter, which can be done by pressing the “Transfer Materials” button found at the inventory screen’s right side.

With your item shattered, you can no longer use it in Last Epoch. For the most part, you can only salvage common and rare items, so Legendary or Unique items won’t be salvageable. The purpose of the salvage system is to acquire shards and glyphs to use for crafting in Last Epoch, which is an entirely different feature.
