The much-awaited remake of Silent Hill 2 has finally gotten a release date. Fans of the notorious survival horror game will be able to explore the eerie town in Maine once more when Silent Hill 2 launches on October 8 for PlayStation 5 and PC. The release date was announced by PlayStation along with a new trailer during the May State of Play livestream. Preorders are open, and early purchases will provide a few attractive bonuses at launch.

All preorders of Silent Hill 2 for PS5 include two wearable masks for James, the game’s main character. These are Mira the Dog mask and Robbie the Rabbit mask, with the latter being exclusive to the PS5 version. However, PC purchasers will still receive the dog mask with their preorder.

Physical copies of the Silent Hill 2 remake for PS5 are priced at $70 and can be preordered from major video game retailers like Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart, GameStop, and Target. Digital preorders for PS5 and PC are available on the PlayStation Store and Steam.

A digital deluxe version is also up for preorder at $80 for both PS5 and PC. This edition grants 48-hour early access starting October 6, includes a digital art book and soundtrack, a pizza box mask, and the additional bonus masks for PS5 (one for PC).

The original Silent Hill 2 ranks among the top survival horror games and has often been highlighted as the peak of the Silent Hill franchise. Thus, expectations for its upcoming remake are considerable. The remake brings enhanced graphics and audio, along with wider environments in the town of Silent Hill, allowing for more exploration. A significant update is the switch from the original’s fixed camera angles to a new over-the-shoulder view, aligning Silent Hill 2 with contemporary gameplay mechanics in terms of player navigation.

The remake introduces a revised combat system. “Classic weapons like the steel pipe and handgun return, now revamped,” states the PlayStation Store description. “Evade attacks with precision-timed dodges, target via aim-down sights, and more, enhancing the intensity and challenge of monster encounters.”

Silent Hill 2 is being developed with Unreal Engine 5 by the Polish studio Bloober Team, recognized for their horror games such as Layers of Fear, The Medium, and Blair Witch, as well as the cyberpunk title Observer.

The Silent Hill 2 remake forms part of a broader initiative by Konami to revive the Silent Hill series, introducing new titles like Silent Hill: Ascension, Silent Hill F, and Silent Hill: Townfall. It also rides the recent trend of remakes of seminal survival horror games, including an acclaimed Dead Space remake by EA and Capcom’s latest installment in its series of Resident Evil remakes, a remarkable reworking of Resident Evil 4.

Silent Hill isn’t the only beloved Konami game getting a revival. Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater is a ground-up remake of the PS2 classic Metal Gear Solid 3 in development for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
