The Nintendo Museum is set to launch in Kyoto, Japan, showcasing an amazing array of Nintendo memorabilia. However, it serves another purpose, perhaps unintentionally, by helping to resolve long-standing online debates. It has already answered a pivotal question: Is Yoshi’s Island (also known as Super Mario World 2) classified as a Yoshi game or a Mario game?

Based on Dan Ryckert’s observations from a press preview of the museum, one exhibition room features areas dedicated to specific franchises, organized into distinct categories. The display for the Mario franchise is the most expansive, featuring not only the plumber’s solo endeavors but also various spin-offs, including kart racing and sports games. Notably, Ryckert discovered that Yoshi’s Island is absent from the Mario section and is instead located in a dedicated Yoshi franchise display.

And there you have it. Based on Nintendo’s official classification, within its own carefully curated history, Yoshi’s Island is not categorized as a Mario game. If you had placed a wager of $20 on this surprising outcome, now is the moment to cash in.

To be fair, Ryckert has promised to relentlessly reach out to his Nintendo connections until this so-called error is corrected, and we wouldn’t underestimate his capacity to pester anyone into submission. Therefore, there’s a chance that Nintendo will reclassify, or possibly recognize Yoshi’s Island in both franchises, as space permits.

Yoshi’s Island features Yoshi (or various Yoshis) as they transport a baby Mario across vibrant islands. It’s part of the Super NES collection available on the Nintendo Switch Online service, allowing you to experience it firsthand and decide which franchise it belongs to.
