The Dawn of AI-Generated Ransomware: A New Era of Cyber Threats

As cybercrime continues to escalate globally, researchers are uncovering alarming trends in the evolution of ransomware, influenced significantly by the accessibility of generative AI tools. Recent studies reveal that cybercriminals are not only utilizing generative AI to write more persuasive ransom notes but are increasingly employing these technologies to create actual malware and offer ransomware services.

A threat intelligence report from the AI company Anthropic identified instances where attackers utilized its large language model, Claude, and its coding-specific model, Claude Code, in their ransomware development process. This builds on findings from the security firm ESET, which recently showcased a proof of concept for ransomware that could be executed using local large language models.

These insights illustrate how generative AI is enhancing cybercrime capabilities, making it easier for even those without technical skills to launch attacks. The researchers at Anthropic indicated that AI is removing traditional barriers to malware development. “Our investigation revealed not merely another ransomware variant, but a transformation enabled by artificial intelligence,” they noted.

Ransomware has posed an ongoing challenge for over a decade. Attackers have increasingly employed ruthless tactics to compel victims to pay, with the frequency of ransomware attacks reportedly reaching record highs at the start of 2025. Estimates suggest that cybercriminals generate hundreds of millions of dollars annually from these activities.

The integration of AI into ransomware tactics further complicates defense efforts. For instance, a UK-based threat actor identified as GTG-5004 was reported to use Claude to develop, market, and distribute ransomware with advanced evasion capabilities, selling packages ranging from $400 to $1,200 on cybercrime forums. Notably, the developer lacked significant technical skills and relied heavily on AI for essential tasks.

In response to the rising threat, Anthropic has taken steps to ban the account linked to the ransomware operation and introduced new detection methods to prevent AI-generated malware.

Although research indicates that the pervasive use of AI in ransomware development is not yet widespread across the entire ecosystem, experts caution that the trend is growing. Security analysts point out that while some groups are beginning to leverage AI in developing ransomware, the most common applications involve initial access strategies.

In a related breakthrough, researchers at ESET recently announced the discovery of "PromptLock," a ransomware that runs locally and uses an AI model to generate malicious scripts for targeting and encrypting data. While this particular strain has not been deployed against victims, it highlights a noteworthy shift in cybercriminal methodology towards harnessing AI tools.

The rapid pace at which cybercriminals are incorporating LLMs into their operations is a cause for concern. Anthropic’s research identified another group, GTG-2002, which utilized Claude Code for various stages of cyberattacks, impacting at least 17 organizations in sectors such as healthcare and government.

The rise of AI-assisted cybercrime illustrates a critical evolution, where AI not only serves as a supporting technology but also acts as an active agent in executing complex attacks, significantly enhancing the threat landscape.
