SAP has introduced a new service called SAP Sovereign Cloud On-Site, allowing customers to run their cloud workloads entirely within their own data centers. This offering is part of a broader initiative to enhance data sovereignty, enabling organizations to manage data handling, logging, and key management independently while adhering to strict sovereignty standards.
With the SAP Sovereign Cloud On-Site service, organizations will have the flexibility to decide how their cloud infrastructure is managed, ensuring compliance with local regulations, particularly for enterprises in the European Union. This service is aimed at assisting these organizations in running their enterprise resource planning (ERP) AI workloads without depending on U.S.-based infrastructure providers. Additionally, SAP’s Sovereign Cloud Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) is now available globally, ensuring that data can be handled within EU data boundaries.
Alongside this, SAP also announced Delos Cloud, a specialized data sovereignty service catering to the German public sector, designed to meet stringent local security requirements.
The concept of data sovereignty has evolved significantly from merely fulfilling regulatory compliance to encompassing the broader idea of operational, political, and technological independence. Martin Merz, president of SAP Sovereign Cloud, emphasized the importance of digital resilience in Europe, stating that it relies on a secure and scalable sovereignty model, which SAP aims to provide through its offerings.
With a commitment to invest €20 billion ($23.3 billion) in developing new digital sovereignty products, SAP is prioritizing the digital autonomy of its clients. The emergence of services like the Sovereign Cloud signifies a shift, where enterprises now seek greater control over their data, moving away from the traditional reliance on public cloud providers.
In this context, Garima Kapoor, co-founder of MinIO, remarked that SAP’s offerings would provide organizations with the control necessary to define their data destiny, as the notion of sovereignty transitions from a compliance necessity to a strategic advantage in digital operations.
