On Sunday, Russia showcased its military capabilities by launching a 3M22 Zircon hypersonic missile from the frigate Admiral Golovko in the Barents Sea, close to NATO borders. This missile test is part of the ongoing Zapad 2025 military exercises conducted in conjunction with Belarus, designed to assess defense and coordination strategies between the allies. This demonstration of military power follows recent incursions of Russian drones into Polish and Romanian airspace, heightening tensions with NATO.
In a video posted to Telegram, the missile launch was depicted, indicating the successful destruction of a target within the Barents Sea. The Zircon missile can travel at speeds of up to Mach 9, covering distances up to 1,000 kilometers, making it a formidable weapon that is difficult to intercept. Additionally, Russian military exercises included the deployment of Sukhoi Su-34 fighter-bombers, capable of carrying substantial armaments across great distances.
Concerns are arising due to a series of drone incursions on September 10, where at least 19 Russian drones entered Polish airspace, prompting NATO’s response as Polish forces intercept the drones. This incident, labeled an “unprecedented violation” by Polish officials, led to the invocation of Article 4 of the NATO Charter, calling for consultations among member countries. As a countermeasure, NATO initiated Operation Eastern Sentinel to bolster its defenses in Eastern Europe.
