Take-Two Interactive’s recent investor call revealed disappointing news regarding the performance of Borderlands 4, which, despite becoming the third-highest selling game of 2025 and having the largest launch in the franchise’s history, did not meet the company’s sales expectations. The CEO of Take-Two, Strauss Zelnick, attributed this shortfall primarily to optimization issues with the PC port. He expressed satisfaction with the game’s critical acclaim but acknowledged the release challenges that affected initial sales.
PC players had voiced their frustrations through negative reviews, encountering significant performance and optimization issues. In response, Gearbox Studios’ CEO Randy Pitchford challenged the criticisms, advocating for the game while providing tips to improve performance across platforms.
Compounding the challenges, the title’s console performance in October echoed the shortcomings observed on PC. Although the specific sales figures for the console weren’t publicly available at the time, reports indicated that Borderlands 4 saw a steep drop in downloads on the PlayStation Store—falling from third place in September to fourteenth in October.
As Gearbox prepares to launch the first paid DLC for Borderlands 4, players can look forward to new story missions and legendary loot. However, the anticipated release of the game for the Switch 2 has been indefinitely postponed.
