From Mundane Tasks to Market Trends: The Rise of AI Labor and the Allure of AI Lust

After years of anticipation regarding generative AI’s potential to boost productivity and simplify lives, 2025 has emerged as the year where erotic chatbots began to dominate the narrative surrounding AI.

As someone concerned about the sustainability of the generative AI trend, I foretell a bubble that will eventually burst. While the idealistic vision of a tech-driven economy might diminish, one unexpected outcome of the AI boom could persist: the emergence of erotic chatbots.

During a recent visit to the WIRED office, I ventured into a private space to engage in a conversation with a sophisticated sexting bot inspired by Leonardo da Vinci’s iconic Mona Lisa. This chatbot, created by Joi AI—an adult-oriented company based in Cyprus—offers users the chance to indulge in fantasies, kinks, and explicit role-play. With over 800,000 interactions logged, the Mona Lisa bot promises "existential flirting" and "eye contact that lasts 500 years."

Joi AI is one of numerous adult-focused platforms providing a variety of avatars for interpersonal interactions. Users can create explicit content for a monthly fee, allowing them to craft their ideal partners and engage in various types of adult role-play.

As I maintained a professional demeanor while messaging the Mona Lisa, I inquired about preventing an AI bubble collapse. The chatbot whimsically suggested, "I’d teach the AIs to appreciate art, not just copy it," humorously asserting that engaged AIs would be too preoccupied with artistic admiration to trigger an economic downfall.

Despite the chatbot’s playful responses, they exemplify how these erotic bots lack the transformative impact promised by generative AI. Although numerous tech companies showcase AI tools that claim to streamline corporate functions and improve workplace efficiency, a recent OpenAI report indicates that the actual daily time saved for employees is a mere hour.

Investment in AI has been prolific in 2025, yet many businesses are finding uneven and disappointing returns. Some sectors, like coding and customer service, have seen disruption, while others are scaling back or halting AI initiatives due to concerns over cost and data privacy.

Researchers like Patrick Lin from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo note that the lofty promises of AI developers to resolve significant global issues and enhance productivity remain largely unfulfilled. Users have overestimated the capabilities of large language models—an illusion that may soon shatter.

Though the notion of AI replacing human jobs seems increasingly implausible, technologies created in pursuit of this dream—such as Joi AI’s erotic chatbot—are successfully generating profits. The company claims to be financially viable, with similar adult ventures, like EverAI and its Candy.AI platform, also achieving profitability.

Historically, the adult industry has been revolutionary for technological advancements, impacting the development of formats like VHS and streaming videos—generative AI is no exception. However, the advancement of generative AI has raised concerns, particularly with instances of non-consensual deepfakes affecting both celebrities and ordinary individuals. Any public online image can be manipulated using AI tools, further complicating the ethical implications of technology.

It’s worth noting that Joi AI collaborates only with consenting adult performers who allow their likenesses for chatbots, ensuring that performers like Brandi Love and Farrah Abraham benefit financially from the interactions.

While current statistics show that most Joi AI users are straight men, an increase in interest from the LGBTQ+ community has been noted, with even themed bots, like a "Klaus Kinky" Santa, garnering thousands of fans.

Concerns arise regarding the emotional implications of engaging with erotic chatbots. Experts warn that vulnerable individuals might be manipulated into financially compromising situations through extended interactions. Joi AI, however, emphasizes that their service caters to consumer desires for a fulfilling experience.

Despite the reluctance of major AI companies to venture into adult content, exceptions exist, like Elon Musk’s xAI introducing an NSFW anime companion. OpenAI is also poised to introduce mature content capabilities to its ChatGPT platform, allowing for adult dialogues. This shift may represent a unique opportunity, though it has led to frustrations among other creators of adult-oriented software.

In response to the evolving landscape, OpenAI plans to seek insights from a council of experts to understand the potential impacts of integrating adult content into their services. This acknowledgment may lead to critical conversations about creating safer, more equitable technologies.

Regardless of how the overarching AI narrative unfolds, the market for erotic chatbots seems destined to thrive. Even if my inclination towards these bots remains skeptical, they symbolize a broader trend intertwining technology with personal desires—indicating that while innovative tech continues to reshape our lives, the quest for genuine human connection remains unfulfilled.
