A new installment in the God of War franchise is expected to debut this year, centering on a narrative set in Greece. According to reports from Giant Bomb’s Jeff Grubb, this entry is a standalone title rather than a remaster, focusing on Greek mythology instead of the Norse themes explored in previous games like God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarok.
While the term "side-story" is used, it may indicate a game of significant scope that is larger than standard downloadable content but does not warrant a full sequel. This structure is similar to titles such as Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy. The series has previously ventured into Greek mythology with two PSP titles and God of War: Ascension on PS3.
Initially, there were speculations about announcing a remastered collection celebrating the franchise’s 20th anniversary. However, Sony confirmed during a recent event that no new games were forthcoming. They did announce a new cosmetic DLC titled Dark Odyssey in honor of the anniversary.
Additionally, a TV adaptation of God of War is in production, with Amazon already ordering two seasons. Sony Santa Monica’s next project remains a mystery, though reports suggest the studio is also developing a new intellectual property, its first since the original God of War released in 2005.
