Lies Of P: Overture Review – A Captivating Prelude to a Puppet’s Journey

Lies of P: Overture dives back into the dark, twisted world inspired by Carlo Collodi’s Pinocchio, serving as a prequel to the original 2023 souls-like game. The expansion explores the tragic events that led to the Puppet Frenzy massacre and the subsequent downfall of the city of Krat. While there aren’t any significant mechanical changes from the base game, the storytelling in Overture is notably improved, creating a compelling experience filled with atmospheric depth.

Players assume the role of Geppetto’s puppet, navigating a timeline with his companion, Gemini, as they face the challenges of Krat. The DLC can be accessed from Chapter 9, providing an experience that feels more challenging than the main game. The initial encounter with a giant, petrified polar bear serves as a sharp reintroduction to the game’s mechanics. Players must quickly relearn combat skills, as they are thrust into intense battles right from the start.

The narrative, while initially perplexing as players adjust to the time travel concept, maintains a brisk pace, offering about 15 hours of gameplay. The integration of urgency within the story creates momentum, although some narrative elements are delivered through optional notes, enriching the atmosphere yet risking being overlooked. The visual storytelling, particularly through grotesque art and eerie exhibitions left behind by enemies, captivates and disturbs, reminiscent of artistic inspirations from horror.

As players explore the new environments—like a snowy forest and an abandoned zoo—they encounter various creative enemies that add excitement to combat. These foes are designed intriguingly, ranging from robotic circus performers to mutated animals, each providing a unique challenge. Notable boss encounters, like the fight against Markiona, Puppeteer of Death, showcase intelligent design, balancing enemy types to create a fair yet challenging experience.

The level design remains a highlight, filled with semi-open areas that encourage strategic exploration and skillful combat, presenting environments that narrate tragic stories while keeping players on edge. Although some areas, such as the underground prison, feel generic compared to the beautifully crafted spaces elsewhere, the overall quality of design captivates.

New weapons and abilities enhance gameplay variety, including a bow that allows players to engage from a distance, and claws that offer rapid assault options. The introduction of Legion Arms, which function like powerful gadgets, further enriches combat mechanics. Additionally, a free update adds new difficulty modes and a rematch option for bosses, widening accessibility and replay value.

Despite its successes, the DLC does face criticism for a less compelling villain and for certain modes lacking leaderboard functionalities, which could make them more engaging. However, the introduction of easier difficulties allows more players to experience the game’s narrative focus.

In conclusion, Lies of P: Overture provides a satisfying expansion that builds upon the base game’s strengths while introducing compelling new content, making it a worthy addition for fans.
